APC Adopts Concensus For Ward, LG Congress -Chairman

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Jigawa on Wednesday said it had adopted consensus as a way of electing its ward local government executives. Alhaji Shu’aibu Haruna, the Chairman of the Election Committee in charge of Hadejia Local Government Area, said this in an interview with News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Hadejia. Haruna said that party officials were elected into the 26 elective positions in each of the 11 wards of the area. He said that five delegates were selected each from the ACN, ANPP and CPC to elect party leaders at the various wards. The chairman added that the action was in line with directives of the national secretariat of the party. “The delegates chose their leaders based on popular option. We allow things to take natural course. “We believe, we are one party; the party provided equal and level playing ground to all members,” he said. He said the congress was extended with additional days to allow for wider consultations among its members. “The congress is fixed for Saturday but it was shifted to Tuesday for wider participation.” Meanwhile, the APC ward congress in Kebbi State has been scheduled, for the second time, from Wednesday April 9 to April 10. The Chairman of the five-member National Committee for the congress, Alhahji Danbuba Mohammed, said this in an interview with journalists in Birnin Kebbi on Wednesday. He said that stakeholders of the party in the state demanded a change in the date for the congress. Mohammed added that the stakeholders agreed that a five-member ad-hoc committee be appointed to monitor the congress in each of the 225 wards. This he said became necessary “to erase any doubts and misgivings from any member”. The chairman said that adequate materials had been distributed to the wards, security agencies notified and members cautioned against lawlessness, during and after the exercise. He dismissed insinuations that disunity among APC interest groups was responsible for the delay in conducting the ward congress. He expressed the commitment of the committee “to remain resolute in the conduct of a credible ward congress”. NAN recalls that the ward congress was postponed from last Saturday to Wednesday and rescheduled for Thursday before the latest re-schedule.
